Denel Needs More State Funds

Sept. 10 (Bloomberg) — Denel Ltd. needs more money from government before the organization can return to profit BUSINESS DAYS said, citing group chairman SIBUSUSIO SIBISI, who commented in a report to South Africa’s parliament.

Government guarantees of 1.85 billion rand ($246 million) to sustain Denel’s borrowings will keep the state-owned arms manufacturer solvent in the financial year ahead, the Johannesburg-based newspaper said, citing the report.

The Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Administration will be sponsoring “Small Business Day at the MSI Chamber” on the first Thursday of every month.

The monthly event will be by appointment only from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Small business owners, prospective business owners or anyone with questions for the SBA can call for a one-on-one, one hour long meeting. Anyone planning to attend is encouraged to bring their business plans and have questions ready for the SBA representative.

Farmers, millers warn of threat to food security

SA MAY be perilously close to losing its status as a food-secure country, as grain farmers and millers warn that crumbling rural road networks and the contraction of Transnet’s freight service are seriously impeding the country’s ability to import, process and distribute basic foodstuffs.

About 35% of SA’s population, or about 15-million people, are already chronically vulnerable to food insecurity, according to a Statistics SA poverty survey.

Chronic food insecurity means people are malnourished. In worsening conditions, such as last year’s food-price crisis, they could be subject to famine, for which there would be little relief if mass food aid could not be distributed.
